For the field trip on Wednesday, we meet up at eight o'clock sharp at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Rostock, where two busses will be waiting for us. A lunch package for the day will be distributed and after a half hour drive, we will arrive at our first stop at the Julius Kühn-Institut Groß Lüsewitz.
In Groß Lüsewitz the buses will take us directly to the 57 acres test field of the Julius Kühn-Institute, Institute for breeding research. There you will be able to see the full diversity of lupin species with field trials of Lupinus angustifolius, L. luteus, L. albus and L. mutabilis. There will be several presentations on current projects and topics involving genetic resources, alkaloids, prebreeding, intercropping etc. From the field, the buses will take us further.
The next stop will be at Saatzucht Steinach in Bocksee. Saatzucht Steinach is one of the most important lupin breeders in Germany. We will have the chance to see their breeding gardens and trial locations and exchange current breeding perspectives on lupins.
At the breeding station in Bocksee you will also get insights about the UFOP e.V., ProLupin GmbH and INP Institute:
UFOP (Union for the Promotion of Oil and Protein Plants) represents the political interests of companies, associations, and institutions that are involved in the production, processing and marketing of domestic oil and protein plants in national and international committees.
Prolupin GmbH is a company, which evolved from a joint project with Fraunhofer Institute (IVV) and focuses on protein extraction from sweet lupins. The isolated protein is used in several products like lupin milk, ice cream or yogurts and is marketed under the label “Made with Luve”. Here, we will see a presentation about the company and hopefully get the chance to taste some of their famous lupin products.
The Leibniz Institute for Plasma Science and Technology e.V. (INP) is one of the leading research institutes in the area of physical plasma, its basics and applications. It is the largest non-university institute in Europe in the field of low temperature plasmas, employing about 200 scientists, engineers and other specialised personnel. At present, plasmas for materials and energy, environment and bioeconomy and hygiene and health, are the focus of interest.
Afterward we will have a classic German BBQ with drinks organized by Saatzucht Steinach and UFOP until the buses take us back to Rostock.
